About Scotty B:
I’m a San Francisco Bay Area native! I began my career in early 2000 as an IT Professional and bought my first home at the age of 21. Over the years I’ve learned how to leverage real estate by owning my house and not paying rent. This has helped to keep my monthly living costs fixed and sheltered from landlords who decide it’s time for the rent to increase.
On top of that, by owning your own home, you can be a live-in landlord to rent out a room or two to get extra money on top of it! You can use that money to either pay off the mortgage quicker or set up an emergency fund. I’ve used the money to do both!
After learning how real estate worked at such as young age, it helped launch my passion for understanding personal finance and how money really works.
When the great recession hit in 2008, it was a battle!
I battled my way through the great recession of 2008. Just before the recession officially started, I was in a secure job and thought that I had nothing to worry about. I was devastated when it all came to an end.
To make it worse, my house was under-water (I owed more on the mortgage then my home was worth.)
Luckily, I had saved up an emergency fund ahead of time because I had roommates paying me extra money every month. That gave me some extra time to float my financial obligations and mortgage payments.
I later found various temp jobs, computer freelance gigs, and made it through the end of the recession keeping my home. Since then I’ve recovered all the equity back and have a low fixed rate mortgage.
This was one of the most terrible lessons of my financial life. Since then I’ve learned a lot more about personal finance and other tips and tricks relating to financial wellness.

In my free time (when I’m not thinking about work or money)
In my free time, I enjoy driving my Ford Mustang GT, enjoying the outdoors, shopping at flea markets, and playing retro Nintendo video games (check out my Nintendo Collectors Guide.)
I update this site on a regular basis, so you’re not reading content from 100 million years ago!
Enjoy your time on the site.
