In this article, we’ll talk about Roomster.com! Another roommate finder website and mobile app that I recently discovered for finding your next roommate.
Roomster can help you for finding a new roommate, being a live-in landlord and renting out a room, or being able to rent out your entire place.
In this review, I’m going to give you a complete overview of Roomster.
We are going to cover the following areas:
- Signing up and Logging In
- My Experience Creating a Listing
- Filling Out Your Personal Profile
- My Experience With Viewing the Listings
- Membership Options
- The Downside of Roomster
- How to cancel your Automatic Renewal
- Roomster is Available Throughout The U.S.
- Final thoughts
Before we begin, I noticed during my research on Roomster from some Google searches that some people reported being scammed by an issue with Roomster’s automatic billing system.
They were automatically charged and did not cancel the subscription before a certain time limit. I can assure you, Roomster is not a scam.
In a bit, I’ll show you how to cancel the Automatic Billing, so this does not happen to you.
Signing up and Logging In
The registration process is pretty straightforward, but you will not be able to use an e-mail account. The only option will be to register with your Facebook account.
For people who don’t want to use their Facebook account, you’ll have to skip this service. Heck, you might not even have a Facebook account.
I wish that Roomster would consider changing this policy in the future. When you send people away who don’t have Facebook you shrink the pool of potential roommates one could meet.
I checked out the reasons why Facebook is the only option. Roomster says this is a way to maintain security and accuracy. It also prevents bots and spam from high-jacking the site.
I honestly don’t mind the policy, but a lot of people will most definitely be left out.
When I tried logging in, I had realized I first signed up back in Dec. 2016. I had to reactivate my account because it was automatically disabled.
I give them kudos for that because it means that they value active members and care about the user experience. Meaning, that everyone you see is most likely an active member.
The overall experience of signing up was very pleasant and friendly.
The layout is beautiful, and the website has a refreshing updated minimal design with a smooth flow of options to click on.
Roomster also has a Droid or iPhone app which you can use.
My Experience Creating a Listing
The process for creating a listing is incredibly easy and did not take me more than 10 minutes to complete.
Some of the important information you will fill out is your location, length of time, the move in date, photos, the monthly rent, a catchy headline and a short description (160 words max) describing the details of your listing.
If you are listing a room or home you’ll also list the features and amenities such as a gym, fireplace, dishwasher, parking, A/C or indoor laundry, etc.
You will also see many lifestyle options such as cleanliness, party habits, work schedule, pet preferences, etc.
When you are done with your listing all you have to do is wait for the messages to come in.
Filling Out Your Personal Profile
After your listing is made you’ll want to finish completing your profile, we’ll cover that below.
Parts of your profile will automatically be completed since Roomster will import some of the information from your Facebook account. You should complete everything else that is left blank.
Your profile has things like your Marital Status, Contact Info for phone or social media (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Linked In), an About Me Summary, Interests, and a section for adding photos of yourself!
By having a completed profile, you will be able to put your best foot forward which will increase the chances of a successful match.
My Experience with Viewing the Listings
The process is fun, and you can see profile pics very clearly. The listings are laid out well with the connect (contact) option readily available.
There’s even a handy map to the right side which shows dots to indicate available listings. There’s a lot to choose from in the Bay Area.
I see most of the listings concentrated around San Jose, San Francisco, Oakland, and Walnut Creek! It looks like Richmond and Berkeley have fewer listings, but I still see some really good ones to choose from.
You can set your budget and various search filters such as Age Range, Location Radius, Sex, Zodiac Sign, and if the person loves Pets or not.
You can also sort the listings by latest activity, newest profiles, and rent amounts.
I was able to see over 24 listings just in San Francisco alone!
After seeing hundreds of listings in the SF Bay Area, this is a great sign that many people in my area love using this service.
You can review all of the terms for a membership at this link, https://www.roomster.com/terms
There are two membership levels with Roomster, let’s cover the features of each one below.
Basic: Is free and allows you to create a profile and search the site. You can also bookmark a member, receive daily matches via e-mail, and you can use the keyword and personality trait options during your search.
Full: You get all the basic options with a few extra goodies! Some of the goodies include a private mailbox with all messaging options enabled, and you can view the social media profiles of a member (if that member provides their social media account.)
The full paid membership is set up to be an automatic renewal. According to the terms of service in the link above, there is also some refund options available if you accidentally get charged.
The Downside of Roomster
The only downside is the automatic billing setup, but this is pretty standard with all serviced based websites. Especially online dating or other subscription based sites.
The good news is I’ll tell you in the next section how to cancel your automatic billing in a few easy steps!
How to cancel your Automatic Renewal
Here is how to cancel the automatic renewal, so it does charge you the extra money you did not plan for. Especially if you already found a roommate and don’t need the service anymore.
Here are the steps! I found these buried in the “Terms of Service.”
- Logon your account and go to your main profile homepage.
- Go to the Settings / Account / Subscription page.
- Select the option to cancel your subscription.
They do not accept cancellations via e-mail!
Special cancellation instructions for mobile phone only users.
If you set up the billing through the Apple Store, PayPal or another third party system. You’ll need to initiate the cancel of your subscription through that service directly.
Roomster is Available Throughout The U.S.
If you live in one of the following cities, Roomster should serve you well!
Anchorage, Atlanta, Austin, Baltimore, Boston, Charleston, Chicago
Columbus, Dallas, Denver, Honolulu, Houston, Kansas City, Las Vegas
Los Angeles, Memphis, Miami Beach, Minneapolis, Nashville, New Orleans
New York, Orlando, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Portland, Providence, San Antonio, San Diego, San Francisco, San Juan, Savannah, Seattle, Washington.
Roomster is a great option for anyone that uses social media and wants to view and look at the social media profile of their new potential roommate.
It will not work for someone who just wants to keep communication through e-mail however.
